I really wanted a job that wasn't going to be the same every day- that was really important to me. I was offered a few HR roles, but I was drawn to the buzzing work environment which recruitment has. It's competitive and good fun and very interactive.
The training academy was a big bonus. They teach you to the ropes and support you more than in other agencies. I also liked how consultants share candidates, which showed how much the team get on. There was more autonomy here and less focus on strict KPIs.
It was a lot more in-depth than I expected! I had been dubious at first after a few friends in the industry suggested that the training would be something they mention in the interview and don't follow up with. They didn't believe I would be getting all the training I did- but I did! It helped give me the confidence early on.
I didn't expect to be as moved by it as I was. I helped place a candidate who had relocated from another continent to be with his wife but hadn't found a job for a number of months, it was very emotional. I skyped him and his wife, who were both in tears of joy after accepting the offer. For some people, you are really influencing their entire lives.
Some things are out of your control and you have to let it go and move on!

To lead my own recruitment team
The people! No one believes how well we get on as a team, but we really do look out for each other. We share our highs and lows and are a great support. Having our training manager Yasmin on hand to help is a godsend- any advice Yas gives, you know you can follow to a T.
Effectively having a small business within a business! (And the money, obviously)
The awesome office and a Boutique-sized company! The Company culture was cool too and you could sense that everyone in the office got on really well.
I learnt a lot of the ins and outs of Recruitment and a lot surprised me! It was great to have something to follow rather than just thrown into the big bad world of recruitment!
It was challenging and it also taught me that people are hard to predict! But in the end, it felt really good to help someone find a new role
Don't be scared and be inquisitive!
Roller Coaster Journey
Hopefully, to open an Applause IT office abroad, I'm still trying to think where would be best, any suggestions?
A great team to work with (And being right where the food vans are!)
I had friends in recruitment who were making good money. I have a psychology degree, but if I wanted a career in that I wouldn’t have a job until I was 26 and would likely be working in voluntary jobs until then. I wanted to earn good money, but I also liked the idea of owning my own private enterprise. In recruitment, especially at Applause, you grow your candidate and client base yourself, there’s a lot of satisfaction and ownership in it.
I was really swayed by the training academy- it showed the company's investment in us and the fact that it was classroom-based training meant it was good for bonding with fellow academy members. I think a lot of graduates look for a role with a training scheme.
I really enjoyed the training academy, it was a really good chance to get to know everyone: learning together and also making mistakes together! Yas is a really good trainer, and it gave us all a lot more confidence. Even now, all you have to do is get your training folder out and you have everything you need. I never felt thrown-in at the deep end. lot easier!
Let's just say, it was described in the second academy as 'the hardest placement ever made'.It's a bit of a legend around the office! One of our senior consultants, Dan Rodrigues, helped me along the way, there was a 6-week process between the job offer and placement as the company were going through internal changes to management. It was a team effort keeping the candidate engaged and reassured throughout the process.. *starts singing the first cut is the deepest*
Always expect the unexpected!
Keep in mind why you're doing what you're doing and share the positivity with the team. You've got to be able to laugh at situations, too.
Exciting, Exhausting, Rewarding
In the long term, I'd like to manage would be to my own recruitment team at Applause IT. Short-term I want to be working with the majority software houses in the Midlands
The people! Everyone will always help you. There's a team spirit, that you won't find many places. In an environment where things can change at any time, it's really important to have a good team working environment!
Ultimately, I was drawn to the fact that you can make a lot of money! But also, I wanted to challenge myself
The offices were a big selling point, being in the city centre, with the table-tennis and pool table- I could instantly picture myself working here. I also like that it was a small, specialised recruitment company, so I wouldn't be lost in an anonymous company.
The training was very helpful, as specialists in the tech industry, we learnt about different technologies and working styles such as agile and scrum working methods. It gave us a lot of insight and gave us a better idea of what to expect and how to deliver.
I was quite lucky with my first placement; it was a surprisingly smooth experience. It was brilliant to finally get my name on the board and get the handshake and celebratory bubbly from the directors.
Expect to work much harder than you think you will have to!
Just dial the phone! The more you put in, the more you get out.
Fun, Exciting, Motivating
Have a regular and consistent pipeline of positions and candidates and earn loads of money!
Hands-down the people and the friendly work-culture.
I was looking for a fun working environment where I would be interacting with people. Something without restraints where if you do well, you can really excel.
The push on the development aspects of the role appealed to me. I also looked at Glassdoor and saw that the CEO and consultants rated it highly.
It was a good laugh- it felt like we were learning insider tips and we got the chance to get all our questions out in the safety of the classroom rather than the recruitment floor! After the training, I felt had the knowledge and was raring to go!
It was a great feeling. Delivering the offer to the candidate in his first job in IT. It was a smooth process, to be honest, I'd envisioned more problems.
Make sure you get organised early on with spreadsheets, contacts, live vacancies, colour-coding, notes, calendars reminders, I structure my day every day!
Don't give up, not putting a deal in the first month doesn't mean you’re failing, keep working hard, you'll get there
